What are Pouch Oysters? Distribution Formats and Checkpoints for Small-Packaged Oysters
Pouch oysters refer to a packaging and distribution format where shucked oyster meat is placed in bags or pouches. As this is neither a legal breed name nor a single processing method, refrigerated raw oysters, oysters for cooking, blanched (boiled) oysters, or frozen oysters can all be pouch products. When purchasing, you must verify the intended use, product state, weight standards, and storage information by SKU rather than relying solely on the name.[1]
Orders should be placed by distinguishing them from shucked oyster meat (Al-gul/Kkan-gul).
Shucked oyster meat (Al-gul/Kkan-gul) refers to the form of the oyster meat after the shell is removed, while pouch oysters refer to the method of packaging that meat.

Evaluate packing medium and net content separately.
The liquid inside the pouch may be natural oyster liquor or a specific packing medium intended for the product, and the composition and treatment methods vary by product. Codex standards for raw shucked molluscs require the food-grade suitability of the packing medium and product form labeling that avoids misleading consumers.[1] The fact that the liquid is clear or abundant does not prove purification or suitability for raw consumption. To determine purification status, you must verify the processes used rather than the appearance of the liquid. For the distinction between purification of live molluscs, process seawater treatment, and washing of shucked oyster meat, please refer to Differences Between Shellfish Purification and Seawater Treatment.
Even for the same “1 pouch,” if the proportion of packing medium differs, the actual amount of oyster meat included will vary. Distinguish between total net content, solid content, and drained weight, and compare data with identical measurement conditions such as sieve specifications, drainage time, and weighing points.[1]

Align Small-Packaging Specifications with Receiving Inspection Items
- Use and State: For raw consumption/for cooking, raw/blanched, refrigerated/frozen
- Weight: Definitions and measurement methods for total net content, solid content, or drained weight
- Packaging Unit: Weight per pouch, quantity per box, single-use input amount
- Storage and Traceability: Storage temperature, dates, manufacturer/packer, and lot number
- Packaging Condition: Determination and recording of leakage, seal damage, and abnormal swelling
Upon receipt, the instructions for use must be read along with the packaging condition. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries provides guidance on “for cooking” labels and thorough heating during the management of production sea areas.[2]
Even if the pouch is transparent, the review of labeling cannot be omitted. Do not apply the transparent packaging exemption for natural fishery products directly to frozen or blanched products; instead, verify the labeling requirements for each product type.[3] For frozen pouch products, record IQF/block status, blanching status, and glaze standards separately. These items can be reviewed alongside the Criteria for Selecting Frozen Oysters.
When inquiring with Samsam Mulsan for supply, please provide the intended use, product state, weight definitions/measurement methods, weight per pouch, quantity per box, monthly usage, storage temperature, and criteria for determining packaging abnormalities. Actual supply specifications and transaction terms must be confirmed at the time of inquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tell if a product is for raw consumption just by the name “Pouch Oysters”?
No, you cannot. “Pouch” is merely a packaging format. Check the “for raw consumption/for cooking” label, raw/blanched state, and refrigerated/frozen conditions on the SKU-specific labels and specifications.
Can I include the packing medium in the purchase weight for comparison?
While you can compare total net content including the packing medium, that value does not represent the actual amount of oyster meat. Obtain definitions and drainage conditions for solid content/drained weight and compare them using the same measurement standards.
How do I align small-packaging units with my business’s usage?
Determine the weight per pouch based on single-use input amounts, usage flow after opening, refrigerated/frozen storage space, and quantity per box. It is difficult to judge operational suitability based on “1 pouch” alone.
How should I handle packaging with leaks or swelling?
Set seal damage, leakage, and abnormal swelling as receiving inspection items, record the identification information and status of the relevant lot, and follow the hold/determination procedures.
What labeling and storage conditions should be included in the purchase order?
Include intended use, raw/blanched state, refrigerated/frozen status, weight definitions, packaging units, storage temperature, dates, and lot information, and ensure consistency in terminology across quotes, specifications, and receiving inspection sheets.
